October 8 is National Walk Roll to School Day! Find an event to Join or Make your Own Active Trip to School
Walk Roll to School Day 2025 is Wednesday Oct 8 and there are a ton of fun ways to make an active transportation trip to school instead of driving. Ride a scooter, walk with a group of friends, or if you are at Beecher Road School (BRS) in Woodbridge, there is a daily bike bus where parents and kids ride to school together in a group (see Facebook flyer below).
Find out if your school is participating in an official Walk Roll to School Day event by checking here. National Bike to School Day 2025 is in May, but no need to wait. There are bike buses and walking school buses cropping up all over Connecticut. For more information and a bike bus or walking bike bus starter kit from other parent groups, email info@ncat-ct.org

Let's Stitch Together New Haven Neighborhoods Torn by I-91
Come to an October 15th Community Meeting and Walk Audit for the I-91 Neighborhood Reconnection Initiative — the first in a series! It starts with a 5 pm Walk Audit at the Willow and State intersection then heads to Wilbur Cross High School (181 Mitchell Drive) for the presentation/discussion portion of the meeting from 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm. This session will focus on Exit 6. This is the First Meetup in a Series
The City of New Haven's I-91 Reconnection Initiative is a project funded by a $2 million federal grant to study and plan for the removal or redesign of infrastructure to bridge neighborhoods split by the I-91 highway construction in the 1960s. The initiative, which includes community engagement, will assess ways to remove physical barriers, create public spaces, and unlock land for housing, focusing on areas like Long Wharf, Fair Haven, and the Mill River District.
Project Goals
Areas of Focus The study will focus on the following areas along the I-91 corridor:

State Street Lane Closures Herald Major Active Transportation Project
Mayor Justin Elicker and City Engineering staff announced the beginning of construction for an urban trail in the heart of downtown New Haven, with the goal of providing safer infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. The first step in this $6.7 milllion project means closing the northbound lanes and converting the current southbound lanes to two way vehicle travel.
According to the New Haven Independent, the "roadway changeup is part of a broader effort by the Elicker administration to improve safety for pedestrians and bike riders, and to open up new public space for transit-oriented development...The State Street reconfiguration details are included in (the above) flyer published by the city’s Engineering Department ."
With a new cycle-track on the east side of State Street, the State Street Reconstruction Project will provide a fully protected greenway route through downtown New Haven, according to the New Haven Friends of the Farmington Canal Greenway newsletter.
For more information about adjacent city activities, see Thomas Breen's New Haven Independent writeup. |
