Advocacy Win: CTtransit Bus Fares Not Going Up this Year

During hearings this month for a 10 percent increase in MetroNorth and CTrail train fares, Connecticut Department of Transportation confirmed bus fares will not be raised this year as Gov. Lamont had proposed in his initial budget.

The Connecticut General Assembly Appropriations Committee nixed the Governor's proposed bus fare increase in its budget version this spring, a move that has now been accepted and confirmed in the state's just released transportation, said Dan Baker, a transportation supervising planner with DOT.

Train fares are set to rise by 5% beginning Sept. 1, and another 5% on July 1, 2026. For example, an off-peak one-way trip between Hartford and New Haven on CT Rail would rise from $8.25 to $8.75, and a one-way trip from Stamford to Grand Central Terminal on Metro-North during peak hours would rise from $16 to $17.75 by this time next year. Officials with the state Department of Transportation said the fare increase was necessary to keep the trains running.

Thanks to a powerful transit equity campaign from high school students like Nayeli Figueroa of Hartford (pictured above testifying at the Connecticut General Assembly), high school students and Veterans will be eligible on October 1 to receive a 50% discount on CTtransit buses statewide. Individual school districts can negotiate with DOT to leverage the half-price discounts into free passes for transportation insecure students.

Transit Oriented Development Coming to New Haven Union Station

A backwards proposal use state-owned land to build a 1,000-car garage in prime downtown space has been transformed into new housing, a science center for children, and a moderate-sized parking garage serving

tenants and nearby transit users. Property adjacent to New Haven's Union Station will be the site of two sixteen-story towers containing 470 apartments. One quarter of the apartments (118) will be reserved for households making no more than 50 percent of Area Median Income. The two phases of construction on the $316 million project are scheduled to begin in late 2026 and be completed in 2028. More information in the New Haven Independent.

IS THERE A DANGEROUS STREET, SIDEWALK OR BUS STOP

THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED NEAR YOU?

NCAT wants to help organize neighbors and businesses to address dangerous walking and cycling issues or bus stops on your routes.

How to Start a Safe and Fun Bike Bus or Walking School Bus!

A bike bus/walking school bus is a group of people, typically children and adults, who cycle or walk together to school or other destinations along a designated route and schedule. Kids and parents work together to emphasize safety, community building, and fun (boom boxes and energetic playlists encouraged!). Bike buses are becoming increasingly popular as a way to promote physical activity, reduce traffic congestion, and create a more vibrant community. Bridget Moriarty, CT's Safe Routes to School Coordinator, and the Active Transportation team at Connecticut DOT have just published a guide to help you start a bike bus or walking school bus. Building a strong community of parents, teachers, kids and school administrators is the best way to start and support these awesome buses. Stay tuned for details on an upcoming bike bus/walking school bus webinar from NCAT.
